LloydsTSB & Virgin MBNA - lowered your interest as existing customer?

After being refused for a new low rate credit card (recently moved house etc), I read on the site that it can be an idea to bluff your existing lenders by calling up, telling them you have a new 0% card, or at least low rate of interest card, and would like to enquire about closing your account once you transfer the balance.
Has this worked for anybody with LloydsTSB or Virgin?
