Emergancy childrens passport

ok will not go into the why's and should have's - but any advice ideas please?
Relations should have flown to US this morning - however when booking into their local airport last night realised their 9yr old should have her own passport to fly to US (presently on Mums as has been for 9yrs).
They did manage to return home to retreive all paperwork for her new passpaort (was on the list of to do's), they are now in London with an appointment at the passport office for Mon am. We know what it says on the web site and also what has been said via the hotline.
However has anyone had similare experiance and did you manage to get a passport same day?
Updated for reference - As they had all relevent documents she was issued a new passport on the day - told it would take four hours to process however it was ready for collection before the four hours they had been told it would take - result. Should have flown 8am Sunday however new flight was 16.15 on the Monday.
