Can black fencing be re-coloured?

A relative has moved into a house where all the garden fencing is black. It's good quality, so she doesn't want to replace it, but the black is very gloomy and depressing.
Is there a way to change the colour to, say, brown?
Any advice appreciated.

Paint it, it will take a few coats but any colour can be changed.0

Maybe better results to use a garden paint rather than a stain. Will likely take a few coats though0
