    There is a thermostat to stop it overheating, but yes there would also be some wasted energy.


    If you have a poorly insulated house and in the middle of winter, I would generally expect the input control to be 3/4 to max.


    Once the weather is warmer you can back it off by 1 or half everyday, until its too cold, and then turn it up a little.


    It also depends on how long the heater is powered for over night. i.e. full 7 hours or e.g. only 1 hour at midnight and 1 hour at 6am
