From time to time (especially seems to be after 10 pm!) my computer slows right down.
Task Manager shows memory at 50-60% when this is happening - is that the reason? Most memory seems o be taken up by Firefox (1500 MB or so).
Closing Firefox and re-opening takes it down to 300MB & things speed up again.
Why?

Poor memory management in Firefox.
All those naughty sites and tabs cluttering it up?
Which version of Firefox? Quantum? i hated it and rolled back a few versions. Noticed the you need to upgrade has stopped but on sites with lots of flash it says the page is slow do you want to wait or quit.
Didnt do that before. I think it wants me to upgrade.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

Most problems with Firefox are usually down to the extensions but its generally known that Firefox eats memory given half a chance and this has been an issue for many years.
This may be of interest and it does work to reduce the memory usage, but whether it affects your browsing performance you'll have to see:

What's your computer specs? Are you not using an old machine? If not clear cache and cookies and see if it fixes the problem.0

Go to MS, download the sysinternals suite. In there you will find PROCEXP and PROCEXP64, which is like a task manager on steroids. Run this as admin.
In the options box make sure Verify Image signatures is ticked, and directly below is Virus Total click this and tick Check VirusTotal.com. Tick Show Processes from all users.
Under View, choose Select Columns, Virus total should be ticked, tick User Name too
At first glance the most important columns are: Virus Total, and Verified signer.
the Virus Total should be all blue, but if any are red and the count is like 2/68 then in is still probably safe.
For Verified Signer expect most to be ms, intel. Expect the verifier to be Avira, if you use avira but you should be able to recognise the verifier with the product. The possible problem ones are '(No signature was present in the subject)', but these still could be good and valid software written by a small developer who did not have the time or resources to get it verified, but they could also be rogue too.
You can also right click on an entry, choose properties, Image tab as this tells you the file location and startup command0 -
