Industrial gas meter in a residential property!

We just had a house renovation and the gas engineer who fitted the new boiler said that our gas meter is very big and is actually industrial. He thinks there may have been a business running from the property many years ago. He suggested that we may be paying un-necessarily large standing charge payments because of that. He thinks our supplier should be able to change the meter for free if we ask them. Is that true? any advice please?

Ring them and ask - firstly to confirm your tariff.

If it is an industrial type then the pipework may be too big to change for a domestic type of meter.

I ve seen thousands of larger gas meters in residential properties. Some of the larger houses in new estates all have medium sized gas meters ( G5 or U 65 ) . It will not make any difference to the price of the units used..Gas will come through at the correct pressure as the smaller meters
Former businesses like chip shops or pubs which have closed down may well keep the old set-up.
So long as the property is now on residential rates and the standing charges are not increased then there should be no problem.
Small business standing charges can be very high

Do you just make things up? a U65 is a huge meter and there isn't a G5 meter. There is a G4 which along with an E6, makes up the majority of domestic meters in the country.

To the op, as has been suggested. Look at your standing charge on your bill, if its around 26p a day, then you won't be getting charged more for having a meter of that size.

It would be a big house that would have a U65 meter. That is to say, its capable of flowing 65m3/hr..
