Electric meter move query

I have hunted for this info but am struggling to find what I need to know.
I live in a typical Victorian two up two down. The electric meter is in the understairs cupboard.
I wish to move the meter and backboard along the wall so I can knock a hole in the wall.
I know I need my energy company to sort the meter, I know I need the power network to sort the cabling. I know it will cost a lot. But I do not understand trenches being dug etc. I litrally want it moved along the same wall, less than a meter in fact, but because the backboard is being moved my energy company can't do it all. BUT will I really need to dig up the front garden? And does this also mean I will need to rip up my floors?

If it's like most underground cable installs, there's the main cable poking out the floor and going to the "cut out". From there it splits into separate live, neutral and earth off to the meter and consumer unit.

If you want everything moved, there's not much they can do but dig up the floor, so that they can re-route the incoming cable to where you want it.

The problem comes if it's a really old cable, or it's not long enough. At that point, they could be into cutting the cable somewhere accessable outside the house, and re-laying a whole new one.

There's not much you can do but contact the DNO, and make sure you have a lot of money available.
