Car trouble!! advice purleeeeeeease!!

Hi everyone,

sorry for asking this here, hope you don't mind.

I have a peugeot 406 P reg 2.0 saloon and have a couple of questions,
At the moment whilst driving, mainly as the engine decelerates or i just ease off the accelerator slightly i hear a very deep rumbling vibration beneath the accelerator pedal and can feel it sometimes through my foot on the pedal to.
It has been suggested to me that the Cat may have come apart as the exhaust os very rattly and wheezy to but no holes present, and has also been suggested that it could be a CV joint?

I'm hoping the latter as obviously cheaper!!! the car is fast approaching it's MOT and needs the following,

1) new front tyre as getting a little close to the limit,
2) new front brake pads as squeeling a little
3) handbrake needs tightening
4) new wiper blades (can do this myself thank goodness!)
and whatever this mystery noise is sorting out to.

My nearby mechanic that i haven't used before has said he would need to put it through an MOT to find out what the noise is. I don't understand this as if i hadn't told him the MOT was due why could he not just take a look and tell me whats up with it?

how much would i reasonably expect to pay for a decent but fair mechanic to do the above work? I already have a set of brake pads that just require fitting.

Any advice would be incredibly helpful

Thankyou
P

If the noise is there when you come off the power, then it's possible gear box noise/chatter...

When you say "haven't used..." - I'd keep it that way...
  • Front tyres - put part worns on for £15/20.
Front pads could have grit and just require cleaning.
Handbrake's are common on Pug's to be weak.
Wiper blades - diy as per your comment.

I'd shove it in for its MOT at a decent garage and whiule they have it up in the air, point out the noise.

They may give you an advice sheet with your MOT for the other noises etc.

But you could be looking at a cat, joints, drive shafts etc etc.

ok, so heres another and thanks for your answers so far. Thing is i know with the hand brake, brake pads and tyre that it is going to fail so think i'll get that sorted first and hope it doesn't fail on something i'm not aware of!!
(wish brake pads really was just dirt, got ripped off by the garage i bought it from, they told me they'd replaced the pads and chucked a set in the boot they said they'd taken off the car. it was late and dark and i couldn't properly feel the pads. Ones they chucked in the car are virtually brand new and they did not replace the pads as promised!! grrrr!)

am i right in thinking it is only certain things that qualify you for a free re-test? can just see this guy charging me again for the MOT and i am on a limited budget.

    Thanks Harveybobbles and others.

NEVER EVER EVER PUT PART WORN TYRES ON. Neither you or the place selling them know their history and with brand new tyres being available for around that price, there's no point.

CV joints are more expensive than CATs. Have a look on Ebay. A Cat for my Mondeo was £63 as opposed to the £150 the local exhaust place wanted.

I always put part worns on the cars i'm selling. As for the price of a brand new tyre I can have 2, 3 or 4 part worns that are a decent make AND pressure tested.
Never yet had a comeback in the 12 years I've been in the motor trade...

It's all about discression to be honest.

However, look at the top right of the following...

  • Nowt wrong with part worns, I've been buying them for years. Think about it, when you buy a second hand car you buy five part worn tryes. You don't know what sort of life those tyres have had. Ebay is good, I run an 17 year old Jag and bought four Pirellis in August with alloys for £100, all with 6-7mm tread. You can't beat it.

I wish 50% of my customers would realise that a second hand car is exactly that! Not brand bleeding new!!
