New job - Starter checklist, P45 and JSA

Hi all was wondering if someone could offer some advice. So here's the situation:

So I was unemployed on the 20th December last year and I didn't file a claim for JSA until the 8th January of this year - JobCentre never asked for my P45. I was offered a job on the 23rd of February (which I accepted) but the company has a 2 week onboarding process so I won't be starting until the 12th March so my work coach told me to look for temp work and sign off on the first day of employment.

My previous employer claims that they've sent my P45 in the post and a bunch of other paperwork which none of them have turned up (coincident maybe or not sent at all). I contacted them again for a copy of my P45 and didn't hear back from them until today with an electronic copy which I have now sent to my new employer. Prior to this, I filled out a new starter checklist for the new company as I had no form of P45 to give to them. But now obviously, I have sent a P45 from my previous employer and I've realised that I will also get a P45 from the Jobcentre once I sign off from JSA on the 12th.

My question is how long does it take to get this P45 from the JobCentre? And should I give another P45 to my new employer? I'm just a little worried about my first pay and tax deductions as the new company pays every 15th of the month (2 weeks arrears and 2 weeks advance). As i start on the 12th March, I won't be paid until 15th April so my first pay check will be after the new tax year already.

Thanks

  • I would have thought a new starter form and a P45 would be more than enough, I cannot see sending them a second P45 will do anything but confuse them!

The main thing to do is check with your employer that they will be using tax code 1185L when you are paid in April.

Also, you haven't said what income you had prior to 20 December but if you were employed and paid some tax chances are you will be due a refund of some of it as you won't have received the benefit of the whole Personal Allowance in this current tax year.

See what is on the P45 from the Jobcentre when it arrives.

What do you mean by an "onboarding process"?

What did you put on the new starter form? Did you say this would be your only job?

As you won't be paid until the new tax year, it probably doesn't matter what is on your P45 from the Jobcentre as long as your new employer uses the tax code (updated for 2018-19) from the P45 you have handed over.

I had quite a high income before I left last year, based on the P45 I got I have overpaid tax already and even being on JSA for 2 months... I think I'm still due for a tax rebate.

It's all just a bit confusing really! Even though I will be paid in the new tax year, would I technically have income still for the 2017/18 tax year for work between 12th March until 5th April? It's just paid late on the new tax year, as that it the payroll schedule for the company.

Their onboarding process is generally the process of getting all the paperwork, payroll done and adjusting the new employee to their new job so it's ready e.g. getting IT sorted, passwords etc.

I put option B on the starter checklist which was: "This is now my only job but since last 6 April I have had another job, or received taxable Jobseeker’s Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance or taxable Incapacity Benefit. I do not receive a State or Occupational Pension."
