SKY+ not recording

I cannot record, rewind live tv at the moment. Getting a "System Fault, recording unavailable.. " message. Have tried restarting several times.
Rang Sky and they suggested trying a software reboot. I did that and that wiped out all my recorded programmes in the Planner but still cant record.
Is it worth upgrading to Sky HD instead of getting the Sky+ repaired?

It's my understanding from this forum: http://www.avforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=261 that most of the programs on SKY 'HD' are infact just broadcasts from SD channels, only a limited amount is infact HD in origin. If you read through the forum, you'll see that there still remain a few problems even with Sky HD boxes.

It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.
  • You need to do a full reset,
    Press:
    Services
    4
    0
    1
    Select

Then select Sky+ Planner Rebuild. Once confirmed you'll be presented with the HOUSEKEEPING screen. This then reboots. Wait a minute or two and then swtich back on. You won't lose any recordings, series links, etc.

this is a commen problem, give it a go.

P.S. ............ I just read your post properly again, sorry looks like you did that.......I better go hide.

  • I was having trouble with FAILED recordings, the remote did not seem to work. I would attempt to change channel to no effect and then suddenly the TV would quickly action all the buttons I had pressed in one go. Very annoyed as I have only had Sky + a couple of weeks.

I did the above (found it on another web-site) However, the Sky Box did not reboot and just stayed on HOUSEKEEPING. After waiting for ages, I decided to just turn it all off at the wall.

When I turned it back on it was all ok. So I am all happy now!!

Power supply failure in the Thomson boxes is very common. Discussed here:

i'm on my fourth sky plus box from when I joined about 4 yrs ago. Thank god I had insurance as would have been pricey to replace each time.

each time I have lost recordings but there isnt a lot can do about it.
failures a re common especialy when when these boxes are pretty much left on all day.
  • Again, again... This is starting to annoy me.

    Hard drive is failing.
  • I did a full system reset by accident when I wanted to select Sky+ Planner Rebuild. Then it would not come back on :mad: Dam machine.....

So I went on web search and found this.

Full System Reset via front panel:
    1. Remove power at mains.
    2. Hold LEFT+RIGHT.
    3. Apply power, wait for ring to light.
    4. Release LEFT+RIGHT, press SELECT.
    5. Ring cycles backwards while disk is quick formatted.
    6. If format sucessful PLAY lights up, if not RECORD lights up.
    7. Box goes into standby - wait 30 seconds are wake it up.
Warning: Full System Reset deletes all your recordings and planner entries.

Had a go (more than once), still would not come back on. Then I found this.

I just upgraded myself, and my box never "switched itself back on" either. But I think the instructions on that site are misleading. It says "do a full reset and the machine will restart". It should say imo, "do a full reset and the machine will switch itself off. Wait 2 mins, then switch it back on" Which is what I did and it works perfectly. I don't think its ever supposed to switch itself back on again.

Thank you, thank you it came back on. :T

Lost all the films though, 90% worth so the OH will not be happy.

If it happens again you should try a forced software download by pressing & holding down the backup button on the box & with the other hand switch the box off then on at the mains,(dont remove your finger from the back up button) all lights on the box should appear & it should say on screen download in progress please wait 10 mins, this will not delete any recordings in the planner, but should fix out the box being stuck on the standby light.
You can't be lost if you don't know where you're going.
