The following is from the MSE page on PPI. I have also included a link to this page.

Have you EVER had Payment Protection Insurance? Simply just having it now means you were almost certainly mis-sold - and are due compensation. That's because a court ruling called Plevin means most who bought PPI - even knowingly - were likely to be mis-sold thanks to commission.

If this is true then why isn't the onus on the lender to check their records and arrange for all customers that had PPI to be reimbursed?

Because it is only if the person feels it was unfair or suggests it was not disclosed.
I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.

Thank for your reply and I agree with you. However, that is not what the MSE quote says as there is no mention of unfairness or non disclosure.

Therefore my objection is really directed towards MSE for their rather dramatic, misleading and emboldened first paragraph.

It really just fuels the compensation for no loss culture.

It's still not the case that every PPI policy was mis-sold. Even your quote from MSE (which has been edited from when it was first published) doesn't suggest everyone was mis-sold, only (now) that it is "likely".

I agree that the MSE article is exaggerated and (somewhat) mis-leading. I expect that is why it has been edited several times.

We've seen enough reports of rejected Plevin complaints here on the forum to show that having PPI still does not guarantee a payout

    Thanks Moneyineptitude.

Today is the the first time that I have seen the article and it does not surprise me that it is constantly being edited.

There is little doubt that one gets a much more balanced view from the forum (even if the balance is often achieved from opposite ends of any prevailing spectrum).
