Income Tax question - traveling abroad

Hi all,

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, I couldn't see one just for Income Tax questions.

My question is - is there any information you can point me toward, or personal experience, regarding working abroad, and if that affects my Self Assessment Tax Return.

To explain, I work freelance so I get paid the gross amount, and will have to do a tax return for the year 17/18 to calculate my owed tax. By my rough estimates I should owe a couple of grand in tax. Nothing too complicated.

But.

For most of this tax year I've been traveling abroad living off my own savings. A total of 36 weeks out of the tax year, nearly 9 months. Does this qualify me for any sort of exemption or discount or am I hoping for something that doesn't exist, I get taxed on how much I earned while in the UK regardless?
