Housing benefit and starting work

Hi, I am a full time student and single parent to 2. I get some help towards my rent through housing benefit. My course finishes the end of September and I am hoping to be working full time soon after. I assume I will no longer be entitled to HB and will have to pay the full rent myself.
I will, of course notify HB but was wondering do they recalculate from the day you start work or from the day you receive your first pay. I will have to work a few weeks in hand and need to start planning for this gap.
TIA
S

  • You might get what they call a 4 week run on i.e an additional 4 weeks HB.

Also it will depend on what you earn as if you were still on a low income you may still have some entitlement to HB

Only if in receipt of a qualifying benefit for 26 weeks without a break otherwise HB will cease from the following Monday after starting work not when first pay is received.

If starting work and paying child care then some of your wages and tax credits should be disregarded.
