Printers and cloud print - techphobe questions

Hi, we need a new printer and I'm really rubbish with tech stuff. Our old Pc is on it's last legs - wont' tolerate windows 10 updates anymore but being unsure what I want to replace it with we bought a chromebook to put us on - wanted something to use on the move anyway. But being partially sighted I need a big monitor for a lot of stuff so plan on buying a new desktop when we've decided what we want. Torn between a new windows pc (boy has windows 10 hacked me off) and an apple desktop (ouchie at the price). Will probably buy that in about 6 months. So in the meantime I need a printer that will run on either an ancient PC or a chromebook or both.

Also, I gather the chromebook has to print via cloud print - I think. So I'm wondering if cloud print is free - don't pay for any cloud stuff atm and don't want to if I can avoid.

Sorry it's long and I don't really know what I'm talking about. Any help gratefully received. Thank you. :undecided
