sharing a house with relative and council tax

Hi all, long time reader, first time poster.

Im hoping one of the guru's out there can shed some light on my situation.

I currently work but have been given notice of redundancy in 3 months. I live with my brother in our old family home, we share all bills and the house is owned outright by us and our 3rd brother who lives elsewhere. Whilst i am hoping to be redeployed in another part of the business it doesnt look likely.

So my question is, what do we do about council tax, will the full amount still have to be paid or will they look at it as if we are 2 separate entities and i pay a cut rate if unemployed and my brother pays a full half?

Thanks in advance for any insight

You will both remain jointly liable for full payment of the council tax charge however you can only claim for council tax support (what used to be called council tax benefit) on a 50% share of the total, gross, charge.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

Also bear in mind some councils pay less than full support.
So your half will be less and you pay the difference.
    e.g
    Council
A discount of up to 75 per cent is available to households where the people are of working age
    Council
All working age people must pay at least 10% of the bill, even if they get benefits or have a low income.
