Abandoning switch half way

I set up a donor account today at TSB. It was approved online and I received the sort code and account number immediately. They told me the debit card and PIN would follow in due course.

However I stupidly jumped too soon and went straight to Halifax and attempted to switch with just my sort code and account number from TSB.

The Halifax online system took my details and appeared to do a credit check on me as it then asked me for the details of my 'old' account to switch into Halifax. They wanted also the debit card number which I do not have yet.

At this stage, I had no option but to abandon my attempt to switch

As it appears Halifax have done a credit check, should I still try to complete the switch once I have my TSB debit card? I do not know how far I got in the process and unfortunately Halifax phone lines are shut to new customers at this time tonight.

Any ideas?

Did you already have a Halifax account, or have you now opened a new one?

I was following the process to open a new one and switch the TSB to Halifax.

I'm hoping my application is half complete maybe and can be salvaged when I have the required details to complete the switch?

Yes, if I remember, they ask for the switch details during the account opening process - so your new Halifax account is not yet opened? In which case you may be able to resume when your have the TSB card, I'm not sure...

Account opening and account switching are separate processes. With Halifax, you get the account opened first and then decide if you want to switch at the end.

Debatable that you can actually switch if you don't provide your debit card details because that is essentially part of the switch. i.e. debits are transferred to your new account.

If a switch is in progress but not yet completed you should be able to stop it because it's typically not completed until the 6th or 7th day when your balance of your old account is transferred to your new account.

    No

You apply for a current account and switch at the same time and that is Day 1 of the 7 days switching process. That's if you want to switch.

Actually, they are two separate processes, but you can initiate a switch immediately after the account is opened and most (if not all) banks integrate the process into their account opening system, but require you to request a switch in that. (You can request a switch at a later date).

Not sure who is right and who is wrong. I have NOT received any email(s) from Halifax that my account has been opened... and obviously the switch was abandoned

You don't need to switch to open a Halifax account, if it's opened they usually say so at the end of the process & provide your sort code etc.

If it's opened you can resume the switch, if you've abandoned the whole application then you'd need to re-apply.
