Planning laws for garden buildings

Do you know what the planning laws are regarding a wooden structure in my front garden? If I don't have to get planning permission it will just be a large shed/tool/wood store. If I have to get planning permission I may decide to build part of it as a carport high enough to fit my work van under. It will be in the front garden. There is already a garage attached to the house, but as there is only narrow access from front to back garden I could do with the extra storage at the front.
It will be a wooden building, the front garden is roughly a quarter acre, it will be between the house & the road & we have a 2-metre fence all around the front garden including at the boundary with the road (2 metres in). We are not in a conservation area or national park.
Thank you in advance.

You should be looking at the Planning Portal, where you will find what can and cannot be done without PP sdet out in some detail:

One of the things that does need planning is the erection of an outbuilding forward of the part of the house that faces the road:i.e. The Principal Elevation.
That doesn't mean that PP won't be granted, but the impact of the building on the street scene and available alternative locations will be taken into account.0 -
Thank you - seems we would need to apply for PP so will make it a carport/wood store. Many thanks.0
