Paying too much for gas ?

Hi,

I live on my own in a 1 bedroom flat. I am at work most of the day, and would guess I have the heating on for about an average of 1 hour per day.

I have a combi boiler (baxi) used to heat my water and central heating. I have nothing else that uses gas, all cooking is electric.

I have one bath a week. I really don't think I use much gas at all, yet my gas bill is £58 per month which just seems high to me. I have phoned my supplier (edf) to query it, but get told that this is what I am using, and the conversation goes no further.

Do you have any suggestions on what I could do to determine if what I am being charged for / using is being monitored correctly by my gas meter?

Thanks in advance.

First of all we need to know your ACTUAL consumption in kwh for the last 12 months;have you been submitting readings at least every month.

then the tariff you are on please.

A quick and simple thing to check is your bill v your meter. Gas meters come in two forms: one records usage in cubic feet and the other records usage in cubic metres. Sadly, it is often the case that suppliers bill using the incorrect meter type.

    Hopefully this is enough information.

Link to edf about reading meter. Notice in the example it is m3, whereas my meter is ft3. Probably nothing, but thought I would mention it.

It appears I used more in 2016-2017, compared to 2017-2018. However, I suppose my main question is... does the quantity I am using seem correct given what I use gas for as specified in my original post.

I realise my payments are now reducing to £51, but it still seems high.

    With regards to readings.

I have to confess I do not keep on top of these very well. I submit them randomly.

Your gas consumption is not unreasonable. You spent £80 on just under 2 months winter use. You have a debt on the account from pre winter so need to pay more to clear that. One problem is being on their standard variable tariff so probably paying up to 30% more than you need to. Get into the habit of reading and submitting every month. You will then get a bill every month. Put your annual kWh consumption into one of the comparison sites, you will be able to save money even by staying with EDF who generally are about the cheapest big 6 gas supplier. I am with EDF and currently paying 2.410p against their svr of 3.623p !

Im thinking of switching tariff. Any advice ? Ive never done this before, not sure if there's any "Gotcha's" when switching or if its straightforward. Im thinking of sticking with EDF, good/bad idea ?

You need the info as my post #2 above.
