EDF applying for a warrant to fit prepayment meter

Hi Everyone

I'd like some advice so unfortunately I have fell very behind with gas and electricity bills. I recieved a letter from EDF last week informing me they was applying for a warrant at my local magistrates court on Monday 5th March 9am. I rang last Friday and was awaiting for a call back for meter readings to set up some form of arrangement however as they never rang me back Iv sent emails and phoned since Wednesday. Because of the bad weather no one from that department has been in since Wednesday and won't be until Monday - the day of my court hearing. Iv tried my best to sort something with the customer service people on the phone but it's out of their hands - only advice they have given me is to call back at 8 on Monday.

I'm really worried about it going to court I really don't want a pre payment meter as I'm worried about not being able to afford the payments after they keep taking debts and I have 4 young children, one just being Age one!

Does anyone know the process if they do grant a warrant on Monday what will be the next stages for me.

Thanks in advance

The last thing you need is a court warrant. That will just add another £150 on the debt, and if you obstruct it and a locksmith is needed, double it. Do your best to stop the warrant..the weekly repay rate is likely to be lower on a prepay meter than whatever arrangement supplier makes for your credit meter .
The weekly repayment can vary between £3.50 and £16 depending on the level of debt. You can haggle it down if they fix it too high.
Prepay rates are now a little less than standard variable. You can switch suppliers ( for a cheaper prepayment meter supplier ) with as much as £500 debt on the meter

By the time a supplier applies for a force ppm fitting (warrant) they will have to go though various stages to get you to pay up your debt.
If they are now going to court you can attend court to put your side but most ones are granted. Once granted they will turn up with an engineer to change the meter, if you are not in they can use a locksmith to gain entry.
Once the meter is fitted they will agree a weekly debt recovery rate the minimum amount is about £3.50/fuel/week.
The thing with PPM is it stops you getting further into debt.
How much do you owe for each fuel?

Sorry to be blunt but if you are worried about having a ppm fitted as you have 4 young children, you should have prioritised your spending and paid the bills like everyone else.
On the plus side, once the meter has been fitted you won’t accrue any more debt.

To be honest, I feel you need some financial help. Even if you won your arguement, there will still be a debt to pay, along with your direct debit.

Get in touch with CAB, they are great with people in a similar position to yourself.

Fitting a PPM means you will pay for what you are using and a small amount towards the debt, at the moment I assume you are not reducing that debt or even keeping up with what you are using. The cheapest way forward would have been to ask for a PPM or even agreed to one when they suggested it. Now it will cost you to have it fitted.

You really REALLY want to sort this out.

Make it a PRIORITY to pay of your electricity debt to the exclusion of all other non essential things (sky mobile phone etc)

If you do end up with a pre payment meter, apart from anything else you will be paying MORE per unit for your electricity which is the very last thing you want if you are short of money.
