Basic contents insurance of pay extra for premium?

Just gone onto a comparison website for the best contents insurance and 'Privilege' has come out as the cheapest provider. The company have asked if I would like to opt for their basic package at £4.58 per month or upgrade to their 'Platinum' home insurance at £12.64 which would give me further benefits such as:

More money for the contents sum insured.
More money for valuable items inside your home.
Accidental damage cover.
Home emergency cover.

Do users feel it would be better to upgrade with all these extras, or would it be better to stick to the basic package and organise separate cover for these things if I need them? Also, are 'Privilege' a decent company to go with?

Any advice appreciated.

I imagine most insurance companies are much of a muchness but admit I prefer those of whom I have heard, who have been around for years.

As for actual cover, only you know what your stuff is worth and how much risk you want to take. Under insure and you can expect to be left with a gap between what the company will pay out and the cost of replacement. Fail to declare items over a certain value separately, don't complain when you find they are not covered.

Try to imagine having to replace everything but the clothes you stand up in all at the same time, then work out roughly how much that would cost. Most comparison sites (I like the one on here) allow you to juggle policies by choosing the amount of excess you pay, the sum insured, etc. The area you live in is a factor as well so high crime = higher premiums. The guide on MSE is comprehensive and should answer your questions.
  • I know someone who works for an insurer - they say that if you imagine turning your home upside down, everything that falls out needs to be covered by the contents insurance!
Don't risk being under insured. It could prove very costly if you're unlucky enough to ever need it.
