The above is not printing. Only one light is showing it does seem that it is printing but one a blank page came out. I have tried troubleshooting but no luck. I think it is time to buy a new one. Can anybody recommend one with cheap cartridges? I am a light user. Thanks

Fixing the printer is preferable but (and I hate printers) if you have to buy new I recommend HP instant ink (may not be the cheapest way to print stuff but definitely least hastle in my experience...)
£30 printer

I go to the shop an pay £1.50 to get them printed. I seem to do this every few years. I also have 5 laser printers at home and 2 of them are colour, but to get them up and running cost far more than £1.50
Monochrome laser for £35

Light User, but what do you print? Just documents, documents and photos, or other?
Do you need colour, or just black & white?
If just B&W, a cheap Laser printer is best.
Please tell us your printing needs.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

I print just documents no photos. Black and white will do. I have seen very cheap ones e.g HP 2630 at £29.99 but I guess the cartridges are expensive. My hp comes on and I have use hp troubleshooter and it does not detect any problems. Only one light comes on the switch on one and it does seem as if it is going to print and then stop. I am wondering whether the colour cartridge is empty that's why the printer is not working.0

I have just taken a look at the HP drivers for your 640C:
https://support.hp.com/gb-en/drivers
With your printer switched on -
Download the above link, then click the orange "Identify now" button.
There is every chance that the last, youngest drivers for your 640C will still be available. Which operating system are you using?
I once had a Deskjet 890C, same basic family as your 640. 2 years ago it was still being used by the person who bought it from me, and the user asked me for a driver. I gave him the link above and he was successful. HP has many old drivers. If you can get the drivers for yours, try reinstalling them.
If you want a B&W laser printer:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-SL-M2026-Mono-Laser-Printer/dp/B00YU62K3K/ref=lp_430587031_1_1/262-9028585-0949153?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1520103877&sr=1-1
The toner cartridges will give you at least 1,000 pages. Compatibles are available.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

Thanks downloaded the link hp does not recognise the device and it is no longer supported as it is over 10 yrs old. It is time for a new one and have decided on the Samsung at £39.99 at currys. I will use it occasionally therefore I will not have to worry about ink drying up. I also like the idea of using compatible but do not always trust Amazon or eBay.0

Why? - I have been using Amazon for years and have had just 2 problems in all that time. Both solved at source by Amazon: one a refund including P&P, the other a new item, successfully received and still working. Ebay I am careful with, but only one problem there, also solved to my satisfaction. Of the two, I prefer Amazon, which is often less expensive, like for like, than ebay.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.
