Personal data accessed by cyberattack at Equifax

My wife and I recently received letters from Equifax saying that our personal data has been accessed following a recent cyberattack against Equifax. The letter offers a number of free services to reduce our risk like Equifax Protect, Equifax WebDefend and Cifas Protective Registration.

I assume the letters are genuine, but I can't see any reference to this cyberattack and action to take on the Equifax website, as I would think it would affect millions of people.

Can anyone confirm that the letters are genuine and whether it is advisable sign up for the services offered to protect ourselves from identity fraud?
