Bathroom Extractor Fan...

We have a Manrose MF100T In-Line Extractor Fan 100mm/4" fitted to our bathroom...

...at the moment it seems to be struggling to gain momentum, starting slowly and then building up to, maybe 75% of its normal power.

...this unit is close to 4yrs old and used, naturally every day.

...can we assume that it has reached the end of its serviceable life, as many of our daily used electrical items seem to be doing...

...or can it be repaired? New brushes perhaps? Maybe someone has experienced a similar situation.

Kind regards.

My suggestion is to contact Manrose and find if there is a Technical Department. If so ask about the service life, and making repairs. Also what guarantee period was on the fan. Perhaps they will do you a replacement deal? Manrose are a respected brand, so I am fingers crossed you will get some joy here.

You could even be cheeky and say "you are on mse Forum, so do not give any responses that might lead to adverse publicity" - or words to that effect

    Furts...Many thanks for your input...

...this unit, along with another that is, at this moment working ok, was fitted as part of a building/electrical contract that we were having done a short time after moving in to this property and no paperwork like guarantees were handed over to my knowledge for these two units.

...I spoke with Manrose Service advice and it was suggested that it could be that the unit is cold and maybe heating it up would solve the issue...

...my reply was that considering the unit was in the loft space it would not be a practical solution to have to do every day. So it was then suggested that fitting a replacement PCB Timer Board would, maybe solve the issue, and I was given an internet site to contact as their replacement PCB Board would be more expensive...

...contacting this site I was told that this PCB Board would cost £10 + VAT and postage, so it is, as one could expect, a gamble or maybe I should just replace this unit if it continues to struggle to start, a catch 22 I guess...a new unit is around £50 delivered I believe.

    ...thanks and regards.

It seems like Manrose have given some customer service/advice which is positive. Have you tried teasing out an answer from them along the lines of ..." your £50 unit does not seem to have given a long life, so I am happy to replace it with a more durable, longer life mode. What would you be recommending here...?"

Everything is built to a price and my gut instinct is your model may be in the budget territory. A better unit may be the answer - over to you.

Again, Furts thanks for your input...

...I will as you suggest contact Manrose, by email and put these points to them and wait for their reply/... I will be back :)

A conversation might be better in any situation like this. No manufacturer will be willing to put in writing "this is a short life product, or this has inferior components", or similar negative points. However, when informally asked some hints and pointers can often given, usually with subtle wordings attached. Over the years I have found this approach to work on numerous occasions on all sorts of building products from underlays, to paints, to shower screens, to electric items like bathroom fans ... coincidentally!

If you don't have any luck I can recommend Soler & Palau available from TLC. Mine have been in for decades with no problems.

EssexExile... Thank you for your input...

I will see where my email comments that I have sent to Manrose take me first and thanks for your kind comments.

As we mature in life many things that were a piece of cake years ago, now can become where you are more dependable upon others, which naturally can be very costly, I must have positive thoughts though...

    ...kind regards.
  • In-line centrifugal duct fans are known for getting gunk on impeller blades, motor , inlet opening etc all can affect the efficient operating try cleaning those, Also checking ducting for obstructions, Manrose MF100T (clone of Vent-Axia ACM100T ) the latter spares available for decades the former (how ever long it takes to buy it maybe a week longer:rotfl: 4 years is pretty good ?)

As promised re : Bathroom Extractor Fan, I received the reply from Manrose that I really was expecting, and it comes no surprise to this Old Codger and I have to realise that we are into different times than I grew up with, their was a time that I could buy with the confidence that 'most electrical items could be repaired', but now it has a different name, 'repair by replacement'...

...this is the reply that I received from a Manrose Technical Adviser...

    ...
This is not a budget version as it has the same features as our part reference !!!8211; MF100T,

To repair this, as this is an electrical component, the PCB may be a hit or miss as it could solve the fans issue or not be a solution, I would suggest replacing the unit,

    Hope this helps...

    end of quote.

EssexExcile maybe I will take your advise and try your contact, as I most certainly will not be replacing the unit with one from Manrose, sorry you may say that I will not get a more trusted brand name, well lets see.

    Thanks for all your comments...

    Kind regards.

When was the last time you cleaned it ? Bathroom fans get a build up of damp fluff and dust on the blades which can cause problems. Is the exit clear, again that fluff can block a grill.
