Designing my own plans for an extension?

Just tying up a loose end with this thread, everyone...
I decided to 'shop local' and found a great local architect for a reasonable price - I decided to use them and the extension starts on Tuesday!
North West based - they charged £450 and that included everything needed to submit to Planning, with copies for me, the builder and a .pdf emailed to me, too.
I tried to save some money, but as pointed out by a few on here - sometimes you're best to stick to the professionals!

Best MoneySaving Moments of this year?
- I saved £150 by repairing my MacBook myself using online guides!
- I went back to Uni, so I've purchased a TOTUM (NUS) Card
- I saved 6 months of Amazon Prime by signing up to Amazon Prime Student0 -

To fully tie up the loose ends, did you find a cheap/free CAD program for drawing plans? I think that was part of your original query that didn't receive an answer from anyone.(Nearly) dunroving0 -
I didn't find any software, I used a local architect instead.Mortgage Free Wannabe

In case anyone else reads this, planning drawings are easy to do yourself. Sketchup is a useful free online programme for doing that but hand drawn is fine. As others have said, difficulties often arise with building regs/actually building the extension.
Do you mind if I ask what local authority you’re in OP?0 -
That is cheap. Super0

The trouble is people do not realise a good set of drawings will probably save them money during the build not to mention get them better more competitive quotes from builders.
This.
If you cut corners, chances are your builder will too.For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.0 -
Haha, exactly!! I read through all this for the answer and found none!!:o:o:o0

Im not sure if there is free software that is worth while using (I pay about £1500 a year for the software I use and thats without all the others for 3D etc).
I have heard this one being used in passing before but not used myself. Its still £50 but that is quite reasonable compared to professional fees. You can also do a trial before purchasing.

Of course I would always recommend using a professional for both planning and building regs. It can save the headache. Their design input can also be very useful!0 -
