According to the latter, about 50 sq ft of solar panels gives 6000kWh per annum

you mean kWh not kW

As you are in the South West it is possible for you to have the highest output in UK. However the output depends on a number of factors e.g. are they south facing, is there any shading etc. Also the size of the panels.

Given ideal conditions you would need a 6kWp system to produce 6,000kWh pa. Thus 24 x 250wp panels each 1.6m2(metres squared) would be a guide.
