Tough UK retail market claims high street stores

Amazon and other online shopping channels beginning to have an effect possibly.

Longer term a lot of retail jobs could be at risk.
Tough trading conditions sank two high-profile retailers on Wednesday, with the collapse of Toys R Us UK and electronics chain Maplin sending ripples across the sector.

mitigate a combination of impacts from sterling devaluation post Brexit
Other than that, nothing to do with Brexit.
  • Toys are us have made a loss 7 out of the last 8 years, marlins was taken over in 2014 and the group that bought it put the cost direct onto marlins books, its interesting that its not just the high street being effected but the out of town sheds as well now.
We can only hope that the companies who are mopping up the trade need more people to work for them to if you like square the circle.

"Big sheds" are an outmoded way of selling product. You only have to look at the size of the distibution centres built and run Tritax Big Box. Stores have little need to carry large quantities of stock.

As a shareholder in amazon, it is nice to see they are winning business from the retail stores. So glad of this news.

Progress is when the less efficient companies go bust so the more efficient ones can hire the staff the space and the capital to create goods and services people actually want

The great thing about free market economies are that we have full employment.
Headline UK unemployment is about 4.5%/but the more important metric of unemployment for 6+ months is closer to 1.5% and a good chunk of that figure are full time students looking for part time work and IMO full time students shouldn't be counted as unemployed even if they are looking for part time work.

Not only what people want, but also at the price people want it (ie cheaper).

If the Brighton store is anything to go by, im not suprised Toys R us has gone bust, i dont think they have changed anything about themselves since it opened 20 years ago
