Question about FlashGet Download manager

How do you actually use it?!!!

Do you simply let the program run in the background, and magically when I'm using explorer, everything will be downloaded faster?? Or am I missing something?!

Sorry to be thick, but an explanation in simple terms would be most appreciated! :D

Flashget won't do anything while you're browsing web pages. It's purpose in life is to manage and restart downloads of files when you click on a link on the page; use it for .zip, .exe, .iso, etc. files that you'll save to disk, not view in the browser.
  • Hi,

Yes, you load up download requests into flashget and it goes off and manages the download for you and also maximises the use of the available bandwidth.

I used to use it but gave up in the end, I think the version I had was running adverts.

There are other similar programs out there like 'Star Downloader' and 'Net Vampire'.
See you on the dark side of the moon

Yes basically anything that you want to download will be downloaded in the background while you carry on surfing. The files to be downloaded are split into separate chunks, which are individually downloaded in parallel and reassembled seamlessly to the user. Click on Help to learn much more about Flashget.

    Thanks for all that....

My wife watches a lot of foreign online (streaming) tv series and movies.... she doesn't download them, they just play in internet explorer.... is there any way to use FlashGet to make these download faster? I've added the url of a page with a movie into Flashget, but that didn't seem to work.

You are going down the worng path.

Watching streaming movies is not the same as downloading them. The film is being fed directly to your PC.

Flashget could only be used to download the movie first, and watch it later.

Watching streaming movies relies on your internet connection (I assume you are a broadband user).
Any connection over 1meg should be okay but it also depends where the movie is being streamed from, if it is somewhere obscure like eastern europe, russia, china you may struggle even with a decent broadband speed.

Flashget was only reallly useful with Dial-up connections. It does help with broadband but to be honest, most broadband download speeds are adequate without it.

As for downloading the stream, inputting the URL will be of no use, the url is simply the page displayed which the movie streams on, not the stream itself.

Here is a link for some information on saving streaming movies:

    EDIT:
As I read your comments, I am assuming the steamed movies are jumpy and stuttering??? hence the question to make things faster

Thanks a lot for that Chris.... very helpful! Yes, when I'm downloading large files, the speed is fine. But streaming movies generally aren't, so I'll try the link you posted. I assume downloading a streamed movie will be faster than watching it while it streams?

    Thanks again
