Credit Refs agencies - Clarification sought on 6 year history rules

A few years ago during a period of bad health I got in to some difficulties and had problems paying back my cards. One of which defaulted. The others show some late payments followed by a period of 0's on file prior to me paying them off and closing them.

My health and finances (I learnt a few hard lessons) are now fine. I'm looking to the time in two years when the default is removed and I can get a decent credit and a mortgage.

Here's my question:

I know records are only held 6 years and defaults removed 6 years after default date. But do those late payments get removed 6 years after they were put on my file or 6 years after the account was closed?

If it is 6 years after the account was closed, that would further delay the recovery of my credit rating!

If you have paid off everything you owed and nothing had to be written off then IMO you may not have to wait until they drop off your credit files.
Have you applied for a mortgage?
Mortgages are usually easier to get then unsecured loans or cards because the lender has security ie if you do not make the repayments you could lose your home etc.
