Fensa/Certass Meaning?

If a Company is not registered with Fensa or Certass does this mean they are bad or unregulated. I am leaning towards one particular quote based on great reviews however, they are not with either Fensa or Certass unlike my other quotes.
Is this really a big deal?

It means your window installation needs to be approved by building control at the local council.

We do so much general building work that there's little point in us having a separate registration for windows when it can all fall under one application to building control making it effectively free.

If anything, having an inspection is better. Fensa and certass are ways of a company self-certifying that their windows comply with building regulations.

As long as there is an application made to building control and they are inspected, it's no problem. An application is about £170 where I am.

Other providers have a Fensa or Certass sign at the bottom of the web page, but I have asked them by email and I'm still waiting for a response.

  • As others have said, not being FENSA or CERTASS registered means they will not be able to self-certify their installations and you'll need building control approval. I wouldn't draw any conclusions on the quality of their work on this basis alone.

As Doozergirl posted FENSA and Certass registered companies self certify their own work as complying with regulations but this is not a guarantee the work does comply with regs. I'm not registered with either and much prefer to get the local Building control officer to inspect my work and sign it off. The problem with self cert is there will always be people who will take advantage.

In the past decade I have replaced windows/doors that carried FENSA certificates but did not comply with regs. The usual one is where they should have fitted toughned safety glass but didn't .
