Can't take my Sky number with me when I move house

As explained elsewhere, I need to move out of my house for probably 4-6 months while structural repairs are made. Having a nightmare trying to sort out all the mechanics of moving. Latest problem is that Sky are saying that, even if we keep all our current services with them (TV, broadband, phone) we can't keep our phone number when we move and will need yet another number when we move back. Is there a good reason for this?
Also, the tenancy agreement says we can't change the phone number unless the landlord agrees so that would be a problem. Haven't asked him yet but if we are unable to change the number the current provider there is BT and they insist on an 18-month contract which I clearly can't do.
Any ideas please?

Why does it matter to your landlord what the phone number is for the house? How is this worded in your tenancy agreement?0

As far as I know, Sky don't offer the option of a Sky customer moving house taking their existing Sky phone numbers with them, even if both the old and new address are connected to the same BT exchange, this is presumably down to Sky's own internal processes , but if it's in Sky's T&C's , then that's it , if you want to remain a Sky customer, you have no choice but to accept a new number when you move, and similarly when you move back, yet another 'new' Sky number will be allocated.
How can the current provider be BT , when your query is about Sky , and how they are advising you cannot move the (Sky) number to the new address ?...where do BT come into it ?0 -
How about ... Keep the service running at your house while you're moved out so you don't lose the number, then either get sky to redirect calls to a mobile, or have an answerphone saying "dial this number instead"

Thank you for your replies. It does look as though you can't keep your number when moving with Sky then. It does state in our rental agreement that the phone number cannot be changed unless the landlord gives consent but I have just spoken to the letting agent and they say that everyone seems to have to have a new number these days so I will be asking for the clause to be removed.
The new temporary address is the one with the BT line in place which, in theory, we could take over but obviously don't want it on an 18-month contract which is all they offer.
We had thought about leaving the phone and broadband running at our own house but I am currently out of contract with Sky and paying outrageous money each month. I have negotiated a good deal for TV, broadband and phone but they can't have it running in 2 separate houses e.g. TV in rental house (with Now TV monthly broadband) and Sky broadband/phone at our house. It all has to be in one location so just want to transfer it to the new address and back home in 4-6 months when we go back.0
