URGENT - ground nesting birds

Not sure this the right thread, so please bear with me if it's not.

Developers are moving in to clear a wood to the rear of our house. I was told somewhere that after a certain date - March 1st I think - that if there are ground nesting birds then work has to stop or at leats can't start. We have a brood(?) of pheasants out the back.

can anyone enlighten me ASAP

Thanks

Not sure about birds but we had an issue with bats roosting in an old school that was about to be demolished.

The RSPCA didn't want to know. So we called a local wildlife charity (small-scale run by one person) and they were marvellous. Ensured the work stopped immediately while the bats were relocated.

I'm sure if you Google your local area, you will find someone similar who can advise.

    Call the local wildlife trust.
  • They will not be nesting for a couple of months yet, and as a non native game species they are not protected under any wildlife act.

What you want is nightjars; nightjars or great-crested newts. They stop any development in its tracks. Anyone know where I can get some?

I blame global warming. The feathered become frisky earlier each year, it seems. The local woodpigeons were amorous in January! Disgraceful!
  • You'd better keep an eye on things yourself too - if the person that wants the trees felled is someone that "thinks" they are Someone any local police called might turn a rather blind eye....:(
  • Vegetation needs to be removed outside of 1st March to 31st August. Looking at the planning permission for the development and see what the surveys say, to see if they identified breeding birds. It's pretty close to 1st March.

  • If you want to message me the planning permission reference, I can go through the docs for you (I do environmental surveys for developers). There has to be an ecologist during the works after 1 March who looks for nests, and if there is, there has to be an exclusion zone around the birds until they are done.
