Title says it all really!

Using softwood boards, installed over existing concrete (level) patio. Fitter is quoting £2100 for materials and £2800 for labour, which works out at around £195 per sq metre, and that!!!8217;s before VAT ?!

Same fitter wants £40 per sq metre (ex VAT) to fit a floating engineered wood floor in an empty room with furniture, carpets and skirting boards already removed......

I live in the South West

Is this excessive?

Hi, we move threads if we think they’ll get more help elsewhere (please read the forum rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board. If you have any questions about this policy please email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com.

I’ve moved your thread from the ‘In my home’ board to the ‘Is This Quote Fair?’ board, where it is better suited.

Come on. If you know he was a ridiculous price for the flooring, why are you calling him back even?

You can price at least the decking boards yourself for rough comparison.

This winds me up now. This board is near useless, populated infrequently by people alread on the In My Home board. It adds absolutely nothing to the smooth running of the forum and yet a post gets moved within 20 minutes. The Home Buying board, on the flipside, has five board guides and posts every single day that should be in the In My Home board which are invariably given inappropriate advice; yet the posts remain there on the wrong board.

I made a suggestion months ago of at least merging this board into In My Home, which was backed up by several people and no one disagreed. It was 'considered' by the team. Considered meaning ignored.

If someone asks what something should cost it lives in in My Home, but if they have a price it moves to Is It Fair? It's absurd, is what it is.

Perhaps you could just ignore the ones that go into In My Home and we could just let this board die a quiet death.

Didn!!!8217;t !!!8220;get him back!!!8221; to do anything, Just asked him to quote for kitchen fitting, flooring, and decking, with a breakdown for each job.

Just looking for some guidance on what would be reasonable that!!!8217;s all ....

    PS

Pricing my own materials (for decking) worked out at around £900 .....

It's not reasonable. £195 a metre for softwood decking that doesn't even last is not reasonable even if was a fair comparison to other fitters. At least look at composite decking if you're thinking of expending such a large amount.

You could have anything for that price.

Any handrails / steps/ digging out / what are the posts if handrails needed ? whats timber is it sitting on etc . more info and I can give you a rough price for materials . Who is suppling the timber for the floating floor and how big is it . ( it matters because small rooms have the same amount of cuts and problems as big ones

What did your other quotes come in at? A fair sized job like that I'd always have at least two, from recommendations.
