Just out of interest.. why is it obvious?
Nutmeg portfolios invest in stocks and bond ETFs that broadly track the markets. Obviously it will depend on your risk profile but over the past 7 months we have seen some good stock market returns followed by a sharp 10% correction and bonds have been on downward path due to the growing expectation of interest rate rises.
In some months the Nutmeg low risk funds have suffered bigger losses than the high risk funds where bonds have fallen out of favor. Vanguard do a good job of presenting realistic investment return expectations for the medium term. You will need to accept a fair amount of volatility to stand a chance of beating inflation.
