Anyone have any idea how much an electric oven uses when on for say an hour? I think it is 3kw so would it use 3 kw and cost 45p as my elec 15p per unit for furst 200 units then 12p?

Of so Im better of using my slow cooker more?

thanks guys

    i'm working the same thing...and
also, if it's cheaper to try and cook micorwave meals, rather than the oven.

Whenever i put the oven on (daily..as am trying to cook from scratch), i try to cook other stuff at the same time...if i'm doing a casserole, then i'll also bake cake/biscuits, to try and make the most of oven heat.

Is microwave cooking a lot cheaper?

    In my view...

Microwaves are great for defrost / reheating / boiling - I generally use hob, oven and grill and make batches of 3 to 4 meals at a time and freeze the excess - although I cook daily for 9 (2 adults, 3 own kids & 4 foster kids).

This isn't quite right. The oven will only use 3kw when the heating eliment is on. Once the oven is up to temperature the eliment is automatically switched off untill the temperature drops - at this point the emiment is switched on and the cycle starts again.

Exactly how much electricity is used will depend on how hot you have the oven and how good the insulation is on the oven. Generally the lower the temperature you run the oven at the more economical it will be.

To try and answer your question - the power consumption will probably be equuivilent to more like 1 kw (this is only an approximation though).

This is a good site, tho american based. And the extra cost of servicing a gas appliance has got to make it uneconomical. 3kw electric oven compared to 180w for slow cooker..... for
    the same meal !!!

    I use a Remoska

    or from Lakeland.

The initial cost would obviously take a while to be recouped, but, it is better than an oven imo especially for one or two persons. The food does not dry out as in an oven and even in the smaller pan which I have, i can do a chicken. I cover it in foil so it does not burn taking it off for the last 20 mins to brown, and it turns out much better than in any oven, very moist and succulent. If you want to grill in it for example kippers for breakfast, it needs little attention. I have done most things in it apart from making cakes, although you can.

It uses about 450 wts so is much less expensive than an oven, and for a lot of things it actually cooks quicker.

I love mine and would not be without it.

thanks all especially scouselander if it's 1kw not quite so worried about using oven as I do mostly cook from scratch and do chicken etc in slow cooker but we loved baked potatoes etc from oven all crispy and done in rosemary and sea-salt!
