Just after a bit of help understanding my boiler and what to do for the best during the cold nights and in general.
So my mum had said about leaving the boiler on low overnight so it kicks in when it get really cold to make sure the pipes don!!!8217;t freeze and burst. I don!!!8217;t have a room thermostat, just a 1-6 dial on the boiler for the rad temp, and trv!!!8217;s on all radiators. I have a combi boiler. I!!!8217;ve turned the boiler from timer to on, and have turned the rad temp to 1 and each trv to 1 (just overnight) so that the boiler stays on very low. I had assumed I wouldn!!!8217;t be able to hear anything from the boiler unless it kicked in to get back to the temp of set it for, but it!!!8217;s actually running constantly, although the green light isn!!!8217;t on to show that it!!!8217;s lit if you get what I mean? When it fires up to send more heat the light comes on. So I!!!8217;m a bit confused about why it!!!8217;s making a noise like it!!!8217;s running. I don!!!8217;t want to be left with a whopping great bill because I!!!8217;ve dpne this wrong. Is this right? I!!!8217;m winging it a bit so I could be way off the mark.
Does anybody know a rough temp for each setting 1-6? Eg I know some people have their thermostat set at say 19 degrees, and leave it on 24/7 and the boiler kicks in when the house goes lower than 19. What number relates to what temp on mine? Which number relates to 19 roughly?
And thirdly, is it definitely cheaper to leave your boiler on all day? Obviously that!!!8217;s asauming I understand what temp to leave it one, and what to do with trv!!!8217;s.
Sorry it!!!8217;s such a long post, I hope somebody can help me!

Leaving a boiler on either overnight or when you are out would seem very wasteful to me - pipes that burst tend to be un insulated cold pipes in the loft or outside pipes - it would be rare for the inside of an unheated house to ever get near freezing - when it is zero degrees outside it never seems to go below about 15 degrees indoors even with heat off all day or all night although 15 still seems quite cold indoors
