Flight compensation out of the EU

Well first, let me just state that I am absolutely gutted. All week I have been looking forward to watching the World Cup Final with friends in the pub in Brazil, having been in Mexico for 3 weeks without anybody to watch the rugby world cup with!
However, I arrived at check in tonight to find that my flight has been delayed by over 12 hours and I will be in the air when the match is being played instead of in the pub

Luckily Aeromexico are still putting me up in a hotel, but nothing can console me from missing my country defend their world cup tomorrow!
I know flight delay compensation only applies to the EU, but is there anything I can do in Mexico or with Aeromexico to claim on this? Not least for the emotional trauma of missing the final due to their faults!
Thanks for your help guys
Ben

If I was you I'd be seeing if they would re-book me on the following flight the next day.
Someone else will answer your question though!0 -
No.
There is in fact no flight delay compensation as such in the EU. There is compensation if you are delayed by overbooking or cancellation for reasons within the airline's control. For simple delay you are entitled to be looked after during the delay and possibly to cancel and get a refund - but no compensation.
Still worth complaining - you may get an ex-gratia payment.0 -
i'd go for the rebook option if they'll let you0

Have a read of this for details about what you are due to:

Why was your flight delayed?
I would like to think safety is your prime concern, so forcing airlines to choose between fixing a plane properly or losing money through delay compensation is not a good idea.
OK, so you missed a rugby match - but at least you're still alive.0 -
