accidentally let the kichen sinc on

I live in a apartment in toronto.
Today my apartment supervisor came and told that on saturday night i left my kitchen sinc tap on and it caused overflow of water and hence the below apartment's cabinets are filled with water. Supervisor said that they had to come in home and switched of water.Surprisingly we are in the home and we didnot even heard of any sound i am not a sound sleeper and even not my husband. and she claims that we are not at home, she says that our car also was not there in parking lot. Surprisingly we are at home only and cannt believe that we haven't heard any sound.

Now supervisor says that they sent for investigation and we may need to pay for the kitchen cabinets.

I am guilty of leaving the tap on. I dont have home insurance. What should i be doing now?? Should i go and check the apartment below to see how much is the damage it caused in kitchen cabinet??

Please advise.
