Making a car registration plate "Private"

I was lucky enough to get the car I currently own with its original number plate in a combination of letters and numbers which have personal significance to me, and which I would like to retain to use on my next car.
My next car has its original registration number as it is 2nd hand.
I am completely ignorant about the process, having never done it before, so I went to the GOV.UK website to learn more.
Unfortunately I can't see anywhere on there a step by step guide to what I want to do and would be grateful if someone knows or has done it recently could tell me (in words of one syllable, lol) what I need to do as I can't get my head round it at all!
By the way I will be keeping my existing original car for a few weeks after the registration changes when I will then be transferring it, with whatever reg number it ends up with, to a family member.
Thanks in advance for your advice:A

I think you need to do a plate retention which is easy enough to do using this link https://www.gov.uk/keep-registration-number but will cost you £80.
Not sure what registration the dvla allocate to the car then - when I did this they reassigned the original registration details back to my car so I could reuse the number plates that came with it
You do get a new v5 a few days later showing the new number plate together with a retention form for the number you've transferred off0 -

BTW, I assume the car the plate is going onto is the same age or newer than the plate shows? You can't transfer a plate to make a car look newer than it is.0 -
They'll allocate a previously un-issued age-related number.

The existing car is older (therefore the year related element of the registration) is older than my replacement car.
I hope that makes sense!
I did realise it would cost the £80 at least! But its worth it to me. It will also avoid me being so aware of driving an increasingly older car as I won't feel I have to chase a younger registration all the time.....well Im not really interested in changing cars without good reason anyway, but it'll mean my cars age isn't on show constantly.:A Goddess :A0 -
Its very easy to do using the link above.
You will probably have to get some new plates made for the replacement number issued to your old car unless you are scrapping it.
You can then remove your existing plates and reuse them if they are suitable.
The road tax and MOT on the old car will be automatically transferred to the replacement number but you should probably tell your insurance company if you continue to drive the old car for a while with its new number.0 -
If you are buying the replacement car from a dealer, they may be able to do the transfer for you which will save a lot of hassle.0
