NCD changing bike insurance

I sold my motorbike last week and because my insurance runs out in 2 weeks, I have decided not to cancel the policy so I can keep my year no claims discount. I have now purchased a new motorcycle which I must pick up next weekend and I have found a different cheaper insurance company than the one I was previously using. Can I start this new insurance saying that I have the full years no claims even though I am starting the policy 1 week before the previous one ends?

You can't use NCD on two policies at once

You will have nil NCD to use until your policy expires

(Failing to notify your insurer the bike is no longer yours is a breach of your policy conditions - could lead to lots of trouble!!)
  • So there isn’t a layover time that I can start the new policy as it’s only a week before the first policy ends? Or if I start the new policy, they wouldn’t ask for the ncd proof for a little while, could I just supply them with the document a week into the start of the new one when I’ve received it from the last?

Really hoping not to have to pay admin fees to change over a policy for a week. Many thanks for your help

You can't normally bring in NCD mid term.

A wheeze to consider is take out a policy and cancel after a week.Though expect an admin fee for cancellation

Or talk to your chosen insurer and see if they will accept your NCD being a week late.

But don't rely on simply sending them a proof showing you had nil NCD when you claimed to have it in place to use knowing it wasn't!

Why not switch the current policy to the new bike? Are you sure there will be an admin fee at this point?

I bought a new car just over a week ago, and my current policy runs out mid March. I called my insurer (Admiral) to add the new car to the policy, intending to keep the two existing cars on the policy until I can sell them. It may be because it was in the last month, but there was no charge at all to add the new car.

Also, when I called them a few days later to add a driver (already named on one car) to one of the others (because the first is being sold first), there was no charge for that either.

I'm pretty pleased about it, especially as Admiral have a rep for being cheap but chargy. Worth confirming with your insurance about adding the new bike until renewal, they may do it for free in the hope you renew with them.

Also, you have told your current insurance company you no longer own the old bike right?
