How long before I can switch?

I'm moving into rented accommodation in a few weeks and I'd like to switch the energy provider if the current tariff isn't good. I know I have to provide them with a meter reading on the day I move in and set up a new account but is there a certain amount of time I have to wait before I can start a switch?
And if the current tenant has a fixed tariff, will I automatically be locked in to it?

When you move into a new property you will be on a Deemed Contract with the existing supplier. Call them with your details and meter readings and you are then free to initiate a switch to your supplier of choice. You will be billed by the Deemed Supplier at its standard variable rate until the transfer of supply goes through. This can take anything from 17 to 35 days from the day that you apply to switch. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Take a photo of the meter readings, and call the supplier as soon as you can. Some renters have a habit of moving out and not telling the Deemed Supplier that they have left. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Keep a copy of the meter readings yourself and dont forget to read the meter monthly and send in the readings to your supplier - keeping copies yourself.
Make sure you check your bills/statements carefully and if the supplier has used an estimated reading, get it corrected immediately. Never accept an estimated reading.
Most problems occur when people don't keep an eye on their bills and let a few estimated bills go by - it can then be a problem to sort it all out.
Stay in charge and keep your own records (download and save PDFs of your bills & statements), it can save a lot of hassle in the future.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
Don't forget to register for council tax and the water utility co. as well.No free lunch, and no free laptop0
