Having reinstalled windows 10 on a lager capacity hard drive I now find that my dvd player is not working ,I have searched on the internet and most of the "solutions" appear to require alterations to the registry which I am not happy with however one solution is find the dvd drive in device manager then right-click on it delete it then restart your computer which will install new drivers automatically
Has anyone any views on this or suggestions to fix this problem
Thanks in advance

That suggestion may work, and can't make things worse than they are!0

This is usually caused after you've installed some CD writing software - ie Nero or CDBurnerXP - or some virtual CD software - ie Daemontools or MagicISO. Windows 10 can do the latter's task on its own without the need for extra software, and the former to a degree too.
IF you look at Device Manager and the CD unit, if you double click on it it should give you an error code. If its error code 39 its usually the registry upper/lowerfilter fix that gets it going again0 -
when I open device manager and double click on dvd/cd rom it say device working ok and the same with disc drives I have not installed any software as you have suggested0

You could try deleting it from the Device Manager and rebooting, which will cause Windows to attempt to reinstall the driver for it.
Alternatively, the DVD drive might not be mounted to the filesystem. If you run diskmgmt.msc, and right click on the DVD-drive, try assigning a drive letter (if it doesn't have one).0 -
if there's no error in device manager and the drive shows up in (My) Computer but it won't read a disk, that usually means the laser(s) in the drive have gone.0

Is it a laptop or base unit? Just checking that the drive was pushed back in properly after removal to fit the HDD - you usually have to remove it in a laptop when fitting a new HDD0

to double check if it is a drive problem, download linux mint and boot if off a usb stick.ig is a live version of linux, very much windows like, dont install it
Put in you dvd and see if it reads.
DVD has 2 lasers on its head - red or blue. Red the longer wave length is used for CDs, blue for dvds. If one burns out the other still may work and you will end up with it only being to handle dvd or CD. Most likely windows though.
I would do what esuhl recommends above, but go further. In Device Manager remove the drive and as much as possible and delete the device. On boot it should be picked up again and automatically installed0
