travel insurance and sickness

I am thinking ahead here.

We have just had to cancel a holiday as my husband is sick.

We have booked a holiday at the end of May to Spain. I took out insurance month's ago when he was fit. So far I've just paid a deposit but they want the balance by the end of March.

We don't know as yet what is wrong with DH so he may be fit to go, but my question is, are we supposed to notify the insurance company of any treatment or condition he turns out to have?

If he isn't well enough to go on holiday i guess we just loose the deposit.

If you have cancelled before being advised he is too I'll to travel then any claim will fail.

As far as future holidays are concerned, if you have an annual policy then you do need to inform your insurer about his new condition

If you take single trip insurance then you will disclose his history at the time you apply for a new policy

(If the Spanish trip is a completely different holiday and you have already got it covered by insurance then read up in the policy on when you need to notify new conditions)

Thank you Quentin. I will do as you say and read up terms and conditions regarding May holiday. I took out a single policy for this.

DH was taken ill just this week and has attended hospital for blood tests and ultrasound scan and has a cat scan tomorrow the day we were due to travel to Cumbria so I had to cancel the holiday. I am hoping to get the money back.

Back to this. Was going to claim for our cancelled holiday but discovered they take £50 each excess of the sum so will only get £238 back. Plus I'll have lost the insurance money of £12 and do Doctors charge for a letter of proof that DH was sick and if they do how much?

Will it be like car insurance because you've had a claim they load you up for next time? Would I be better forgetting the claim?

No its not like car insurance. The excesses will have been set out in the docs when you bought the policy. No reason not to claim

Docs do usually charge for writing letters to insurers - nothing to do with the NHS!
