We bought my daughter a prom dress from a shop in warrington. As with most teenagers she changed her mind,so we returned it after 6 days for a refund. We were told that a credit note would be given as per shop policy. After looking a few times and not finding anything she liked. We asked if we could sell the note to someone else or buy another dress for a family member. We were told no as it must only be used by my daughter or my wife, also if the value of the new purchase was less than the credit note we would lose the difference. Are they allowed to do this and what rights do we have? Any help appreciated.

A store doesn't have to accept returns due to "change of mind" so if the store wishes to impose conditions on any credit they offer out of goodwill they are totally within their right to do so.0

What is their return policy for change of mind purchases? That will tell you if their offer of a credit note is correct.
There is no automatic legal right to a refund for an item someone changes their mind about if you buy in a shop. In fact, if they offer a credit note than that is over and above what they are legally required to offer.0 -
Assuming you bought in store (online/over the phone have different rights) then there is no statutory right to return goods unless they fail to conform to contract.
As outlined by the posters above, there may be a contractual right to cancel but that will be dependent on the returns policy of the store. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0
