British Gas Boiler Cover

My British Gas boiler cover renews in March and the renewal was 20% higher than the current year. I phoned to complain and they immediately gave me a renewal at the same cost as this year.

I also said that I had not had my annual service in 2017 and that the first available slot was April. They then gave me a £65 rebate which apparently is mandatory if the service is not carried out within the contract period.

I thought it would be good to share my experiences.

British Gas Homecare services are hardly services most of the time.

They often end up becoming minimal safety checks. At some point they will no doubt warn you that the boiler is too old to repair if if does break. Then if and when it does fail, they will only offer to replace it at their extortionate prices. At that point you are in such a bind, that often people just go with that option.

I would put your money aside in a savings account, name it boiler repair account. After only one year you will have enough to cover a proper annual service. After a few years you will build up your own fund to replace it if it ever does fail.

By doing the saving account method and using a local gas safe plumber, the money is still yours, in your account.

Unless you have a temperamental boiler you are paying British gas upwards of £240+ per year for a £60 service.
