West London commuting to central

Hi All,

We are looking to buy in west London, any of the following areas:
East Putney
Putney Bridge
Parsons Green
Fulham Broadway
West Brompton
Ravenscourt Park
West Kensington
Barons Court
Hammersmith

We like the west because of the peaceful feel, lots of green areas, nice pubs/bars/cafes etc, close to the river etc but the main concern is the commute.

We work in London Bridge and Oxford Circus and bave worked out the station to work door times for each of the above stops ranging from 30-50mins + add a few mins for walk to the tube. Now while 45-55mins commute is far from ideal, if the area and flat we live in are what we want then we can sacrifice a longer commute but the main Q is how reliable it is and also how busy?

Does anyone commute from any of these areas to similar places to London Bridge or Oxford C and how do you find it? How often is the district line serverly delayed or out of service? How busy is it at peak commuting times from some of those stops in the mornings especially, is it always sardines, do you often have to even wait a few tubes to go by to get on etc?

Any additional advice on the areas etc from people who live there and commute in would be great. Good and bad points to be aware of, safety, amenities, pollution etc.

Many Thanks,

If you live in London you must know that on the whole the tube is reliable. The economy relies on it too greatly. I find you're probably more likely to have to wait for a second tube at mainline stations at peak time when the next one comes straight through. I've never in my life had to wait for a third and that's originally coming from South London with all of us converging on Brixton or the Northern Line!

I don't commute in rush hour but the district line seems to work perfectly well from South Ken and I'm there regularly. I'm sure someone with the right experience will be along in a minute :)

OP check out this walking tube map. Nobody needs 've get a tube right to their work's door. It's often quicker and easier to head somewhere else without a change and walk.

Why not East? I suggested Wanstead before.

  • We prefer the west locations for a number of reasons.
Where is this walking tube map?
Does anyone live near any of these stops and commute to central who can advise?
    Thanks
  • You don’t mention Acton as an option, but we lived there for a long time so I’m going to chip in anyway - loved Acton, nice place to live and plenty of amenities, I would recommend considering it.

We were in the centre of Acton proper, closest tube was Acton Town but I worked near Oxford Circus so I used to take the 266 bus up to North Acton for the central line. West Acton was closer to our flat, but I used North Acton because if I timed it right (which I did most days) I got a train which started there, so always got a seat and it tended to be less crowded once it got to central London. It took about an hour door to door, including the bus, leaving home just before 8.

It was usually busy on the way home, I was getting on at Oxford Circus at the back of 5, but usually got a seat a few stations along. In summer I often walked to Marble Arch on the way home for a bit of exercise.

Hammersmith is very well connected. Ravenscourt Park is beautiful but you will really have to pay to live around there.

If you really want to know what it's like you need to do the commute yourself. Get up early so you can get to each station for the time you'd normally leave from there and do the commute.

Can't link the PDF on my phone but this shows it. Failing that, try Google (other search engines are available) :

  • It sounds like you have only been checking journey times by tube but if you moved to Putney for example you would also be able to use the mainline to Waterloo (or Vauxhall for Oxford Circus).

East Putney is the furthest tube station out but is only 5 minutes walk from the overground station so if you lived in Putney you would have a choice of 2 good routes and a shorter journey than some of the stations further in.

According to TFL's journey planner commute times via Waterloo or Vauxhall would be:

25-30 minutes. Putney to London Bridge
27-29 minutes. Putney to Oxford Circus

I used to commute in this direction to London bridge and having 2 good options was a real bonus on strike days or when there were signal failures.

Putney is nice with decent shopping including a large Sainsburys and plenty of bars but all the stations you list are in good areas.

I beg to differ :D I live on one of the western Piccadilly line branches that, no exaggeration, is part suspended or has severe delays every other day. The infrastructure is broken and gradually getting worse, and nobody seems to be doing anything about it.

In Putney/Parsons green/Fulham you’re somewhat reliant on a single branch of the District Line which as AFF8879 says does have relatively frequent delays/suspensions. In Putney you would have trains into Waterloo as an alternative, and it is a very nice area. Hammersmith/Barons Court is generally more convenient and you then have both the Piccadilly and District lines so if one goes down, sometimes the other still runs. I used to commute in from Hammersmith and it was only ever ‘sardines’ when there were delays.
