The garden looks big enough to build a quality shed in... why not go for that instead? Insulate it, get electrics out there and some kind of temp heating for when you're using it for tinkering...

The house next door is identical.

It looks like a design feature.

You could be right although the windows are slightly different in terms of the positioning of the vents.

Looks like it was a garage at some point.
    Link to previous sales details.

    ETA
Streetview from 2012 shows the garage :)

I'm not - SuperMoose's link shows both houses had garages.
  • Good detective work. There!!!8217;s a high probability that the neighbour liked the idea and they both got it done at the same time by the same contractor.

As the house previously had a garage, it should b pretty straightforward reinstating it. Though I would investigate build one at the side of the house where the wooded gate it!!!8217;s. If it!!!8217;s going to be more of a workshop/ gym/ storage the width should be fine.

Definitely was a garage next door (No 4) originally as in 2010 they applied for (and got) retrospective planning permission for the conversion. I don't know if this is worrying or not, but No. 2 does not seem to have ever had the same approval for its conversion: worth investigating further.

One thing I wonder about is how suitable it is for a garage in the first place, even if it was built that way. It isn't very wide and it seems to have the slope of the stairs taking up part of the back and the corner chopped off too (assuming that Pic 7 is of the converted room) Here's the plans for the neighbour (mirror image of this one) which gives a better idea. The cut corner effectively takes off around 0.5m from the "parkable" area of the garage - by the measurements on the plans a length of around 3.76m - meaning you could only really park a Corsa or a Polo in there and still expect to shut the garage door.

It may have had an up and over door and "garage" on the sales brochure but in this instance I think it is simply more usable as a habitable room. If one of your requirements is a garage to put a car in, I do not think this is the house for you.

Come on people, it's not difficult: lose means to be unable to find, loose means not being fixed in place. So if you have a hole in your pocket you might lose your loose change.

Many thanks, some useful stuff there.

We are a couple of OAPs selling a six bedroom house, The surplus from the sale will go into tax efficient trust funds. Devaluing this house is not really a concern, I have four other properties, three of which are doing very nicely, the fourth is in Spain, say no more.

If there was a garage there, I would assume the wall and ceiling insulation is in place, so the job should be relatively simple.

It is one of several houses I am viewing so just asking.
You never know how far you can go until you go too far.
  • Fair enough but I!!!8217;m still not sure why you want to do this. Chances are it will be a very tight fit for a car and you have a driveway. What do you need the space for?

    A nod's as good as a wink to a blind bat! ;);)

    :rotfl:

seriously tho, don't buy this house - just buy another that suits your needs better, if I was in your position, i'd be looking to build something that meets my exact requirements
