Replacing only the frames of uPVC windows

We are buying a house and the sellers have kindly replaced all the double glazed windows to the house as the seals had blown on all of them. However, the frames themselves are looking a bit old and will need replacing at some point.

Given that all glass is new, I want to know whether it is possible to only replace the frames. I have Googled this without any success and would be keen to hear from others if they have ever done this or enquired about it? All the articles focus on replacing the glass.

It seems such a waste of money to get rid of glass that will last quite happily for many years to come and I would also like to change the frame colour from white to wood effect.

Thank you all very much.

  • No, it's very unlikely you can put the existing double glassed units into new frames,
The glass units are the cheapest part of the job.
  • That might be why I cannot find anything on Google about it. Thank you very much.

    Hi,
I am in the same situation. Buying my first home and the building survey has come back that double glazing has been replaced windows need doing next.
Are you looking at negotiating the price down with the seller, ours is being very stubborn.

Has your report said the valuation is less unless windows are done? If so, I can understand sellers position. They have likely priced the property at that level factoring in its current condition in order to sell.

We refused any offers that were reduced for ‘needs a new kitchen’ in our case, because we priced it with that in mind. We weren’t going to knock of the price of a new kitchen and then accept an offer that factors that in as well as that’s double discount, your seller may have done the same.
  • have the pvc painted . There are some new products in polymer coatings and companies that offer the service to spray them. Inside or out, though its normally the exterior that suffers from UV light making it dull and dry.

FTB or not, if windows are older you can visibly see before putting in an offer. I wouldn't accept a reduction of an offer for that.

As far as I know it isn't possible to buy just frames. I wouldn't rush to replace them if you have other things to get done first though. Refurbing them may be cheaper (new handles etc) and there are a few companies who specialise in that.
  • Hello

The windows will be one of the last things that we have to do. There are plenty of other jobs that need doing first.

The house price isn't quite reflective of the jobs that need doing. However, sometimes it is one of those things that you have to take on the chin if all the other boxes are ticked, which they are in our case.

Both the respray and replacement of handles are useful suggestions and I will look into that.

    Thank you.

When I moved in to my house, I completely redecorated as it was a complete mess. On stripping back the wallpaper from around the windows, I found huge cracks in the plaster. I am sure that the previous owners had the windows replaced with uPVC double glazing, and inserting new frames caused the cracks. Anyway, if you do have the frames replaced, be aware that you may have to repair the surrounding plaster and repaint.

Quite why you can't buy new frames without panes is beyond me, assuming the panes are a standard size, and the frame sizes have not changed. Perhaps there is no demand.
