Gas meter broken... 4 months to fix

Options
Gas works fine but when we moved into the property 1st Dec the gas meter display was blank and so we couldn't get a start reading, I contacted Eon straight away and they said my meter wasn't working at all and apparently hadn't been for some time(!) so someone needed to come out to replace it, the next available date for this was the beginning of feb, I arranged it for half term but unfortunately the gas stop cap wouldn't budge so EON wouldn't touch it, that's now fixed and I now have another appointment for the middle of March (which I need to book a full day off work for).

So my question is how will they calculate my gas from December - March (she said they would estimate based on my readings for a few weeks after but this was meant to happen asap and now its spring by the time its fixed?) and can I get compensation for the fact I cannot move to a cheaper energy company until they sort it?

  • Eon have quite a competitive fixed tariff which is nt that much more than the dubious cheapjack suppliers. The difference is nt worth arguing about. Switch now to that tariff for a year if you are on Eons expensive standard tariff . Do your self a favour and don`t bother with the cheapest of the cheap. It may well end in tears.
Suppliers always err on the customer s side with this sort of thing and are usually very generous in their estimated usage and its a good thing to find out now about a seized control valve.
  • According to uswitch British gas £160 cheaper and scottish power £140 than EONs Go online v5 which they've said is the cheapest for me, all based on my current estimated gas bill though which seems high plus my electric which is accurate.

Glad to hear they're generally generous though as we're not sure what would be a reasonable amount for gas over the winter months as obviously we've just moved in so have no previous usage and a much less efficient boiler than our old place, but does have an electric shower.

Odd, just shows how prices change with different areas and usage because the Eon "Go online 1 year V8 " is coming up on Uswitch as the cheapest of the big 6 and the most popular plan in my area and only £50 a year less then the cheapest. This is inputting average UK usage ( 13200 kwh gas and 3200 kwh electric )
£30 cash back for an Eon switch as well would make it competitive with the cheapest "here today gone tomorrow " suppliers such as USI and Outfox the Market who are topping the table.
I m with Eon on an earlier version and have just noticed the V8 is cheaper than mine so I will be onto Eon first thing Monday to switch tariffs

Hello jess1808 and sorry we weren't able to sort your gas meter at the first attempt. This type of repair needs to be done by the gas distributor.

Usually, where we're dealing with a blank display or stopped meter, we'll estimate usage based on the past history at the property. As you only moved in last December, this isn't something we can do here. As our advisor said, in this case, we'll look at the usage over the next couple of months following the meter exchange.

As House Martin says, we've tariffs available that will be cheaper than our standard plan. If you're changing supplier, though, just be sure to choose one without exit fees for switching outside the renewal period. Of the tariffs we're currently offering, as well as standard, Cap and Track, Fixed 2 Year v11 and Fixed 1 Year v22 don't have exit fees. You can switch tariff online through our website provided you've registered your account.

The Go Online v5 tariff you mention is no longer available and has been replaced with version 8. This, too, has exit fees for changing supplier outside of the renewal period.

Hope this is of interest jess1808. Let me know if you need any more details as happy to help.

Hello House Martin and sorry if you've already sorted this but you can switch tariffs online through our website. You just need to register and go to the tariff page. Saves a phone call.

Sorry again if I'm too late.
