1800 kWh/month in a 2 bedroom flat??

Options
Hiya everyone, I desperately need your advice.
I recently moved to a 2-bedroom, electricity-only flat. It's a very small flat, with no living room, a small kitchen and a small bathroom. Since 05.01, we used over 1850 kWh of energy!!!:( what is more, there was only 1 person in the flat for 2 weeks in January (there is 3 of us normally), and still the usage for that month was almost 700 kWh. From 02.02 until now, we used over 1200kWh, which is app. 60 kWh per day.

AND HERE IS MY QUESTION - IS IT POSSIBLE THAT THE ACTUAL USAGE IS SO HIGH??

***In the flat we have:***
- 2 electric heaters (one 1800W, second one 1000W)
- 8.5W shower water boiler (we only have hot water in the shower)
- electric hob
- electric oven
- microwave, water kettle
- 4 light bulbs in total in the whole flat
- small fridge
- laundry machine

With the above appliances, and I would say rather normal usage of these appliances, is it possible that we really use this much energy? Did any of you have a similar situation?

Are these your meter readings from the day you moved in or are they taken from a bill , in which case are they estimated ?
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

    Welcome to the forum.

60kWh a day is perfectly possible in winter.

Try reading your meter daily to see when it's all being used but it's not difficult to wind up to 60+kwh in a day, especially if you have the heating on for a good proportion of it.

Once you start measuring and monitoring yourself, rather than waiting for a bill to drop through the letterbox/e-mail you'll be able to control your consumption better as you'll know what's using it and when.
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers

Are these just electric panel heaters or storage heaters (in which case you will have 2 meter reading)

If just electric panel heaters then you are using just about the most expensive way to heat your property. 60KWh in a day means an average consumption of 2.5KW which is entirely possible if the heaters are on for much of the day.

If it's rented, then start looking for another place so you can move when your tenancy is up. If you have bought it, you need to seriously think about a better way to heat it.
  • these are the exact meter readings :(

Thanks for your advice! I started looking at the meter every couple hours yesterday and I noticed that our laundry machine uses around 5kWh for a quick wash 30-min cycle and my flatmate keeps washing seperate things instead of just doing one full load
what is more during the night we used almost 20kW, so I asked my flatmate and it turned out that she has the heater on all night every night
I guess I have found the causes (or just one cause - my flatmate lol)
    Thanks everyone!

How hot do have the flat? Turn it down to no warmer than 18C and then see how you go.
  • we dont really have a thermostat, just 2 separate electric heaters(one of them is kinda like a portable electric fireplace), so we just turn them on whenever we feel that its too cold
