Choosing a supplier

Hi all

Bought an house back in September and i’ll Admit i’m A bit naive and didn’t really have a clue what I was doing in regards to gas and electricity.
The house was being supplied by Spark energy so we stayed with them on a move in tarriff paying £54 a month for dual fuel.
Spark estimated it however it turns out we have been using £110 worth of fuel a month so we owed them quite a bit.
We weren’t sending them monthly meter readings (my nativity as i’ve Never owned my own home before) so weren’t aware how much we should have actually been paying until a couple of weeks ago.

Anyway, £280 in debt to them. Have paid it off now I want to switch and fix for a year or two.

My meter readings were and are now as below

12857657 - 13362237 5000 diff gas
9649 - 10965 1300 diff electricity

Should I look at companies price per kWh when comparing?

You need two bits of information: your postcode and your annual usage in kWhs. Your estimated annual usage should be shown on your latest bill. Enter this information into a price comparison website such as MSE Cheap Energy Club and this will show a list of suppliers with the cheapest first. Some suppliers have better feedback than others which is a factor that you need to take into account. Posters here can help.

As a new owner I don't think you will know the annual Gas/Elec consumptions in Kwh.

Log onto a couple of Switch sites, I always include switchwithwhich, and when they ask you to enter your annual use just put 12,000K for Gas & 3.400 for Elec
The savings they quote will obviously be nonsense, but what you are after are the prices per Kw for Gas & Elec, and Daily Standing Charges

    Thank you Hengus and dogshome.

I have gone with Avro energy for the next 12 months.

There rates were 25% cheaper on electricity and 30% cheaper on gas than Spark.
